The common tanpura has 4 string that tuned in 5881, sol do do do, in indian sargam: Pa, as, as, Sa. This tuning is changeable. It depends on the raga(similar to western mode in short) and the register of main player.
The tuning of tanpura is very difficult. The exact tuning is important for main player and listener both. For exact tuning, you have to train your ear.
